Orange level 5 warning issued for damaging winds and waves

A cold front will make landfall over the south-western Cape on Friday. Damaging winds and wave are expected in parts of the country.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 5 warning for damaging winds and waves.

The weather service said a cold front will make landfall over the south-western Cape on Friday, 15 September 2023 causing widespread showers and rain.

DAMAGING WINDS AND WAVES

The weather service said as a result of the cold front, a light snowfall is expected over the mountains of the Western Cape and south-western Northern Cape mainly from the evening.

Strong to gale force winds are also possible along the south-western, southern and south-eastern coastline with very rough sea conditions.

“It will also be windy over the central, southern and western interior,” SAWS said.

The damaging winds and waves are expected to result in difficulty in navigation, damage to coastal infrastructure, beach erosion and possible rogue waves are expected along the Plettenberg Bay coastline in the Western Cape from the afternoon, spreading to Port Edward in KwaZulu-Natal by evening.

MORE WARNINGS ISSUED

A Yellow Level 4 Warning for waves resulting in localised disruption of small harbours and/or ports for a short period is expected between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay from Friday until Sunday has been issued.

In addition, a Yellow Level 2 Warning for coastal winds resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Saldanha Bay and Plettenberg Bay from Friday until Saturday.
