Durban – situated at 29°53′S 31°03′E – is the third most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town and the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Comrades Marathon ‘down’ run takes place between Pietermaritzburg and Durban – or vice versa for the ‘up’ run.

It is nicknamed “the garden province” as was created in 1994 when the Zulu homeland of KwaZulu (“Place of the Zulu” in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged.
It is located in the southeast of the country, with a long shoreline on the Indian Ocean.
