Disaster Management teams are on high alert following the high-level weather warnings issued for TODAY in these parts of South Africa.

WEATHER WARNING: DISASTER MANAGEMENT TEAMS ARE ON HIGH ALERT

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said according to the warning, the coastal areas could experience severe flooding of roads and human settlements.

“The affected areas are the eThekwini Metro and the District’s of Ugu, Ilembe King Cetshwayo and Mkhanyakude.”

THESE TEAMS WILL MONITOR ROUTES PRONE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS

Furthermore, it said disaster management teams are on alert and will monitor routes prone to weather-related incidents.

Cogta warned that the following impacts are expected amid the weather conditions:

THE FOLLOWING IMPACTS ARE EXPECTED AMID THE WEATHER CONDITIONS

  • Widespread and disruptive rainfall: Significant rainfall accumulation is forecast, leading to potential flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and bridges.
  • Flash flooding: Localized flash flooding is possible, posing a threat to informal settlements and communities near rivers and streams.
  • Strong winds: Strong winds could accompany the rainfall, causing damage to infrastructure and trees.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO BE READY?

Here is what you should do:

  • Stay informed: Regularly monitor weather updates from the SAWS or trust worthy news sources.
  • Prepare for flooding: Clear drainage channels around your property and move valuables to higher ground if necessary.
  • Do not cross flooded roads or waterways: Never attempt to cross flooded roads or swollen rivers and streams.
  • Secure loose objects: Secure outdoor furniture and other objects that could become hazardous in strong winds.
  • Be ready to evacuate: If you live in a low-lying area or near a river, be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
  • Have an emergency kit on hand: Ensure you have an emergency kit stocked with essential supplies, including food, water, first-aid, and medication.

“We urge all residents in the affected areas to take precautions and prioritize their safety.

“Please follow the instructions of emergency personnel and avoid taking unnecessary risks.”

The SA Weather Services (SAWS) has issued high-level weather WARNINGS for heavy rain and flooding expected across South Africa TODAY. 

WEATHER WARNING: HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING EXPECTED ACROSS SA 

“If possible, stay indoors and off the roads, avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles.”

the SAWS said.

An orange level 5 warning is in place on Wednesday for disruptive rain in the following parts of South Africa.
