The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several orange impact-based warnings as heavy rain, strong and damaging winds are expected to wreak havoc in the Eastern and Western Cape.
A cut-off low pressure system will develop along the country’s west coast on Saturday evening, 23 September after the passage of a weak cold front.
The cut-off low system will cause dangerous weather conditions over parts of the country mainly from Sunday.
The weather service said Eastern Cape and Western Cape will bear the brunt of the extreme weather conditions with the potential for widespread flooding, very rough seas and damaging winds to occur.
“Torrential 48-hour rainfall in excess of 100 – 200mm is possible in places over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces from Sunday into Monday with damaging winds (60 – 80km/h) in some places,” the weather service said.
