A truck driver was injured after a petrol tanker caught alight on the N2 northbound near Durban on Sunday afternoon.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson told the media they were called to assist just after 13:00 on the N2 northbound before Spaghetti Junction.

“On arrival, paramedics found multiple fire engines tackling the blaze. ALS Paramedics were shown to the driver who had sustained minor injuries. He was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital,”

said Jamieson.

PARAMEDICS FOUND MULTIPLE FIRE ENGINES TACKLING THE BLAZE

Jamieson said the cause of the fire was not yet known, and would be investigated by the Durban Fire Department and SAPS.

The route was closed for several hours on Sunday for emergency services to deal with the situation.

THE ROAD WAS CLOSED FOR SEVERAL HOURS

Durban metro police have urged motorists to use alternative routes.

Meanwhile, it’s another sad Christmas for the community of Plantation in Boksburg as they mark the anniversary of a blast that killed many of their loved ones last year December.

BOKSBURG COMMUNITY MARK ANNIVERSARY OF A BLAST THAT KILLED THEIR LOVED ONES

The families of the Boksburg blast victims are still struggling to find closure one year after the fateful Christmas Eve explosion.

The world watched in horror as dozens of people fell to the ground in agony when a liquefied petroleum gas tanker operated by Infinite Fleet Transport exploded after becoming stuck under a railway bridge on Christmas Eve.

The driver took a wrong turn while trying to get onto the N17 and miscalculated the slope of the road under the bridge. The trailer was damaged, which led to a gas leak. Rescue workers went to help, but a short while later the tanker exploded.

THE EXPLOSION LEFT 41 PEOPLE KILLED INCLUDING 12 HEALTHCARE WORKERS

The explosion resulted in the deaths of 41 people, including 12 healthcare workers who were killed when the flames from the blast spread towards neighbouring areas and the nearby Tambo Memorial Hospital. Scores more were left injured or traumatised.
