South Africans have been left aghast by footage uploaded to social media this week, which shows a reckless driver ploughing into a grandmother and a young child on the sidewalk. The hit-and-run incident took place in the town of Ventersburg, Free State and left both of the injured parties requiring emergency hospital treatment.
The scarcely-believable clip – obtained from a nearby CCTV camera in Ventersburg (east of Welkom, 150km away from Bloemfontein) – immediately shows the driver of a white Volkswagen Polo slamming into the pedestrian and pinning her against a shop wall. The car reverses, leaving the granny slumped on the floor.
She was also carrying a child on her back. Luckily, the youngster did not bear the brunt of the impact, and was comforted by a gathering of locals. However, the video soon takes an infuriating turn.
Three people emerge from the car, have a look at the damage caused to the motor, and after a minute of hanging around, they decide to drive-off. Much to the consternation of the disbelieving crowd around them. It is believed the grandmother is facing the possibility of a leg amputation, and the toddler suffered minor injuries.
