Let’s talk about sex: The big breaking story on Wednesday comes to us from the Ncome Correctional Centre in KZN. The jail is at the centre of a media storm, after video footage of a guard copping off with a prisoner went viral on social media.

Prisoner has sex with guard in KZN facility

The Department of Correctional Services is fighting tooth and nail to save face – a task that is proving to be easier said than done. The damning clip has spread like wildfire on social media, with officials confirming the guard and the prisoner will now face a disciplinary hearing for their actions.

“A video with flustering scenes of alleged sexual activity between an official and an inmate at the Ncome Correctional Centre, KZN, has left the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) appalled, embarrassed, and gutted…”

“Sexual activities between inmates and Correctional Officials are shameful incidents that can never be ascribed to what is expected of our officials… The official involved has been identified and she will be subjected to a disciplinary process with immediate effect. Disciplinary measures have also been instituted against the inmate.”

Both parties to face ‘disciplinaries’

The statement continues asking the public to please refrain from sharing graphic elements of the video, which would surely help minimize the department’s embarrassment. However, the request probably just shows how out of touch our government departments are from how the world works.

A heavily-edited, censored, shortened and identity-protecting clip of the incident has made its way online, however:

KZN jail video raises serious questions

The video is highly problematic, with the officer clearly behaving unacceptably. Added to this – given the power imbalance between prison officials and inmates – serious questions need to be asked about consent and agency.

On Wednesday morning, #prisoner became the top trending topic on South Africa Twitter – by a country mile – as public outrage continues to swell. The dust is unlikely to settle on this matter for quite some time to come.
