One of the longest passenger ships in the world, the luxury passenger cruise liner docked in Durban’s old harbour on Monday.

THE QUEEN MARY 2 IS ONE OF THE LONGEST PASSENGER SHIPS IN THE WORLD

According to a report by Truck and Freight, the 950 crew members and 2 000 passengers of Queen Mary 2 were given a warm Durban welcome by Zulu dancers and singers as they disembarked.

THIS LEGENDARY FLAGSHIP DOCKED IN DURBAN

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda personally welcomed the crew and passengers.Kaunda also handed over a gift to the ship’s Captain Andrew Hall.

THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS WILL BE VISITING THE AREA

Guests will be transferred to shuttle buses to visit tourist attractions in eThekwini and KwaZulu-Natal.Some tourist attractions guests will visit include the Valley of 1000 Hills, Hluhluwe, and St Lucia.

FIRST TIME IN NEARLY THREE YEARS THAT THIS SHIP RETURNED

This comes as the Queen Mary 2 returned to KZN shores after nearly three years.

The last time the legendary flagship was in Durban was at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC STOPPED CRUISES FOR MONTHS

At the time, six crew members who tested positive for the virus were reportedly dropped off at the Port of Durban.

The pandemic stopped cruises for close to 15 months.

THE SHIP CAN ACCOMMODATE THOUSANDS OF GUESTS

This flagship is 1,132ft (345.0336 meters) in length and can accommodate a total of 2,691 guests as well as 1,173 crew members. The Cunard fleet has distinctive red and black funnels and always causes a stir wherever they dock.
