Herman Mashaba proposed in 2016 that he would turn Joburg’s inner city into a “construction project.” As reported by Lungile Dube from Alex News, the plan gained momentum during 2018.

Mashaba’s spokesperson, Luyanda Mfeka, told the press that a “rigorous tender process” followed, and two developers “were successful in their bids to revamp three buildings in the inner city.”

Mayor Mashaba and City Manager Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni will join MMC for the Department of Economic Development Leah Knott and MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango on the project.

The grand plan is to renovate 84 buildings in Joburg’s Inner City. This will create approximately 4 000 student accommodation units and “affordable accommodation for some of our poorest residents,” Mfeka explained.

Mashaba and his team took the streets of Joburg on 24 January to unveil their plan. He told the residents gathered that he is excited and had a lump in his throat about the project. He is proud of his “dedicated team,” and added:

“Within the next month or two, there’d be between another 80 and 100 new buildings, over and above the 84, that we will be making available to the private sector.”

He also vowed to remove the “criminal elements from the city,” and said that there are already 1 500 police officers in training “who will be ready to take over our streets within the next few months.”

Mashaba and his team visited several planned construction sites throughout the day and unveiled their vision with residents. One of the sites in Newton was awarded to the Brickfields Property Developers. The project will create close to 500 new homes.

The Beasconsfield building and Vannin Court building in Hillbrow were awared to EGC Property Developers. Once the project is complete, residents can look forward to reasonable rental rates of around R900 per month.
