The first official Tshwane council meeting was expected to be a dramatic occasion, following the recent developments involving the mayor, Solly Msimanga and the city manager, Moeketsi Mosola.

Msimanga recently revealed that he would be stepping down from his position as Tshwane’s executive mayor and focus his attention on being the premier of the DA.

Mosola, on the other hand, has been implicated in a corrupt procurement scandal over a fraudulent contract involving GladAfrica, a multidisciplinary built environment consultancy.

Opposition parties double down on Msimanga in Tshwane council meeting

The ANC and the EFF have joined hands to disrupt proceedings at the council meeting. Opposition council members have demanded that Msimanga resign with immediate effect.

Msimanga had initially revealed that he would vacate his post at the end of February but failed to present a letter of resignation.

The resignation letter that sat before the council members on Thursday, according to members of the opposition, was submitted by Msimanga, in writing, moments before the gathering.

This, the opposition stated, was unacceptable and the next call of action they demanded was for Msimanga to sign the resignation letter, indicating that he agrees to vacate the position with immediate effect.

Members of the ANC have pushed a motion of no confidence vote instead, claiming that the submission of the resignation letter, only two hours before the council meeting, was unacceptable.

Things erupted into chaos when one of the EFF members, Obakeng Ramabodu, challenged the council speaker on her methods of running the meeting.

As things stand, should either of the opposition members stage a walk-out then it is more than likely that Msimanga’s resignation will not be tabled. Neither will the matter of Mosola’s suspension be given time for deliberation.
