Well-renowned crime reporter Yusuf Abramjee posted videos of the building in flames on Twitter.

The incident took place in an area of Laudium known as the “White Blocks”, a popular informal trading and residential district that is notorious for its rampant criminal activity.

By the looks of it, only the second floor of the two-storey building was affected by the fire. Passersby watched on as the flames grew more aggressive, bursting through the building’s roof and windows and causing a thick cloud of black smoke.

At first, fire and rescue service personnel were not able to connect their pipes to the fire hydrants in the area since, according to Laudium Today, they had been vandalised.

Hundreds of residents have been impacted by the fire

However, alternative measures were taken and the firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

The details around the incident are very sketchy at this time. However, pleas have been made by Laudium Today for donations as it is believed that the fire burnt down the residential part of the building.

It is alleged that the building housed at least 250 residents, including children.

“An appeal to the community of Laudium, Erasmia and surrounds: Earlier today a fire ravaged a building in White Blocks. The building housed about 250 people, including a number of children.

“We require blankets, mattresses, non-perishables food items, clothing, bottled water, etc. No cash will be accepted. Items can be dropped off at the civic centre from 17:30 until 21:00. Message from councillor [Farouk] Essop and Laudium Disaster Management,” the Facebook post read.
