A video posted to Twitter on Friday 7 February, shows five men, excluding the driver of the getaway vehicle, staging an alleged hijacking at the Waterfall Park in Midrand, Gauteng.

The video footage was taken by a nearby CCTV camera. The getaway car, which appears to be a silver Kia, pulls up right in front of the camera at quite a speed. Within seconds, the doors fling open and five men with large rifles step out and start running out of sight towards the left of the camera.

Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to establish where the men were running to or who they were planning to “hijack”.

What can be seen in the attempted hijacking video

In just 45 seconds, a lot can be seen in the video labelled as an “attempted hijacking”. Four men jump out of the car with rifles, disappear to the left of the camera’s view and then return not too long after from the same direction.

It is unknown what or who they approached or what their intention was with their large rifles, but we can’t imagine that it was anything good.

When watching videos like this, it is always important to note what goes on in the background. In this case, a white BMW pulls up at Waterfall Park, roughly at the same time as the silver Kia. However, this quick-thinking driver doesn’t think twice to put their foot down on the accelerator and reverse back down the road after spotting the men with their rifles.

One of the men, who you will notice has a red glove on his right hand, stays by the car a little while longer. When another man returns on the right side of the screen, the man with the red glove runs off as though the two were in a hijacking relay race.

Suddenly, the rest of the men who were out of view of the camera, can be seen hurrying back to the car. The man with the red glove shows the driver how to reverse and gives him hand signals, indicating he should move faster. The car suddenly reverses at a high speed and all the men run after it, trying to get to a door. Once all of the men are in the car, it takes off and the video ends.

Where are these rifles coming from?

In a photo posted just after the video, the CCTV footage was slowed down to reveal the number plate of the car. This will hopefully help police to find the men in possession of these dangerous weapons.

The most frequent question on Twitter was where are these people getting these firearms from:

“But how is it possible that thugs can go around our country heavily armed like this and no one attempts to interrupt them? Where are the police?”

“How are they getting access to these guns? Citizens have no chance…. we must just hand over our things if we don’t want to die…” said another.
