The burning question on everyone’s lips on Monday was, was President Ramaphosa’s speech or a part of it written by ChatGPT, an artificial language (AI)-powered text generator?

WAS CHATGPT USED TO WRITE PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA’S SPEECH?

This follows a series of posts on X that claimed and attempted to provide evidence that ChatGPT wrote the president’s speech about decolonizing education.

The Presidency is investigating whether sections of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on 21 November were written using ChatGPT.

THE PRESIDENCY WILL BE INVESTIGATING THE CLAIMS

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the Presidency does not use AI tools for content such as speeches.

Magwenya, however, said sections of the speech in question were written by the Department of Basic Education and provided to the president’s office.

DEPARTMENT OF BASIC EDUCATION TO SUPPLY THE DRAFT

He said the Presidency has now asked the department to provide the source of the draft that was supplied.

“While we understand that there are questions about the reliability of ‘AI-detection’ tools, we nevertheless take these reports seriously. The use of AI to produce speeches or any other material is unacceptable, and action will be taken should these reports prove to be correct,”

said Magwenya.

‘THE USE OF AI TO PRODUCE SPEECHES OR ANY OTHER MATERIAL IS UNACCEPTABLE’

The South African ran the speech in question through AI Content Detector. According to AI Content Detector, parts of speech have been generated by AI.
