Residents had to be evacuated, and hundreds of homes have been damaged in flash floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
Emergency services had their hands full this weekend as heavy rainfall caused flash floods in the province.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram said they received 157 calls for assistance from the public in the Phoenix, Verulam, Tongaat area in KwaZulu-Natal since 21:54 on Saturday evening.

“These callouts were requests for Rescue, Medical Assistance and damage to property relating to flash flooding on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast.”
He said all off-duty reaction officers and paramedics were called out to assist.
“Several residents were evacuated after homes were flooded. Reaction Officers rescued dozens of families and animals and transported them to the RUSA Headquarters.
“Arrangements are being made to have them relocated.”

Balram furthermore said hundreds of homes, roads and bridges have been damaged.
“Several residential roads have been closed off due to extensive damages.”
Two Reaction Officers were injured during the Rescue Operations.
