This town is tucked away in Mpumalanga, near the Swaziland border.

The Ferris wheel towering among the overgrowth of a forgotten play park or a view of the outside world through the broken panes of a blistered sash window reminds you that people once lived here.

This town was formerly known as an asbestos mining town owned by Msauli and African Chrysotile Asbestos Limited before it was abandoned in 2002 due to the imminent closure of the mine due to a proposed ban on the usage of asbestos eventually signed into law in 2008.

MORE THAN 100 HOUSES, A SCHOOL, CHAPLE AND CLUBHOUSE HAVE BEEN ABANDONED

More than 100 houses, a school, a chapel, a liquor store, and a clubhouse have been abandoned.

Diepgezet at the old Msauli Mine was a bustling but quite isolated community.

THIS CREEPY GHOST TOWN WAS A BUSTLING COMMUNITY

The disuse of asbestos due to its unhealthy nature caused the town to be mothballed some 20 years ago.

The last Chrysotile asbestos mine in South Africa was located in the vicinity but closed in 2001/2002.

THE CLOSURE OF THE ASBESTOS MINE LED TO HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT

This led to high unemployment and people vacating the area, turning it into a ghost town.

Everything that was left behind has been claimed by rust, wild bush, dust, and singing birds.
