The resigned mayor of Vhembe municipality, Florence Radzilani, has been doing the media rounds, proclaiming her innocence, months after the VBS Mutual Bank hype has died down.

Radzilani, now unemployed, was quoted in publications such as EWN and Radio 702, claiming that she had never willingly participated in the looting of the bank.

How was Florence Rudzilani implicated in the VBS scandal?

Termed by Advocate Terry Motau as the “greatest bank heist”, South Africa’s first black-owned bank imploded right in front of our eyes in 2018.

Months after the bank had been placed under curatorship by the South African Reserve Bank (Sarb), Motau’s report was published, detailing the grave degree of looting that was going on behind the bank depositors’ backs.

According to the report, a estimated sum of R2-billion is said to have been looted by those linked with VBS, R300 000 of which was allegedly awarded to Radzilani.

This would mean that she was a lot more involved in overseeing the investment of R300-million her municipality made towards the bank.

However, ever since she was compelled to step down from her position by the African National Congress (ANC), Radzilani has vehemently denied the allegations.

Radzilani: “I was never afforded the opportunity to be heard”

According to the former municipality boss, the investment was not authorised by her, neither was she ever in receipt of R300 000 from VBS.

“I still maintain that I had nothing to do with VBS. The matter in Terry Motau’s report where I’m implicated, it is a WhatsApp conversation between two people and my phone was never requested to check if indeed I had a conversation with the two people mentioned in the report.

“Even the investigators never afforded me the opportunity to be heard,” she explained.

If anything, Radzilani maintained that this was a legacy issue and not something that was born out of her tenureship.

“I knew nothing about the investments into VBS when I came into office and, in fact, the provincial government was aware of the VBS/municipalities relationship from what I gather,” she added.

She claims that the Provincial Forensic Investigation Report vindicated her from the scandal and it is up to the courts to clear her name.

it is also reported that the ANC’s Peter Mokaba constituency has filed for the reinstatement of Radzilani and other party members that have been implicated in the VBS scandal
