Murky and brown-like drinking water is the product that many households have been receiving from their taps in Vaal Central Water fed areas of the Free State.

VAAL CENTRA WATER ACCOUNTS FOR DISCOLOURATION

After numerous complaints, Vaal Central Water decided to address the concerns.

In a statement, Vaal Central Water confirmed to its customers in the Matjhabeng, Nala and Maquassi Hills Local Municipalities that excessive colour discolouration is being experienced in the drinking water that is distributed from the Balkfontein Water Treatment Works.
According to the bulk water supplier, this phenomenon is seasonal in nature and occurs annually at the start of the first heavy rains.

“The cause of this discolouration is due to the presence of excessive organic matter in the Vaal River. Vaal Central Water analyses for the combination of organic in the drinking water and this parameter is within drinking water specification. Currently, a specific component of organic matter (e.g. fulvic or humic acid) is out of specification, causing the discolouration,” the entity explained.
