uShaka Marine World, one of South Africa’s premier marine parks, rejoices as the wage dispute with the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) comes to a close.

The statement, issued on Friday, 15 March, marks the end of the industrial action that had brought operations to a halt.

Strike suspended, park reopens swiftly

Following the effective suspension of the strike on Friday, 15 March, the dedicated workforce swiftly resumed their duties. The park gears up for its eagerly anticipated reopening to visitors.

Employees had downed tools last month, demanding salary hikes that were recommended by an audit firm eight years ago. Despite months of wage increase talks, both parties struggled to find common ground.

ActionSA expressed concern over the prolonged negotiations, highlighting the shockingly low monthly wages of general workers, which were reported to be less than R4000.

Although uShaka Marine offered salary increases, including a R1300 raise for general workers and a 5% – 6% increase for other grades, some voices argued that these offers fail to adequately recognise the employees’ contributions.

According to JacarandaFM, uShaka’s Management, eThekwini Municipality and municipal workers’ union Samwu reached a pay deal last week.

uShaka Marine World resumes operations

With the union’s return to work, uShaka Marine World announces a phased approach to resume operations. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Village Walk Mall: Reopened on Saturday, 16 March.
  • Dangerous Creatures: Reopened on Saturday, 16 March.
  • Sea Animal Encounter Island: Reopened on Saturday, 16 March.
  • Sea World: Reopened on Saturday, 16 March.
