The University of Cape Town has shone as one of the best universities in the world when it featured in the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019’s top ten list of the best higher education institutions in emerging markets.

This is not to shine any less light on the eight other South African tertiary institutions that made the list, but it is quite something to feature next to powerhouse institutions like China’s Tsinghua University and Russia’s Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019: How the list is compiled

The Times Higher Education (THE), for this ranking, used the same performance indicators as The World University Rankings. In placing a tertiary institution, THE looks at the university’s “teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international look.”

The ranking features 442 universities from 43 countries that are defined by the FTSE as ’emerging markets’. South Africa, according to THE’s categorisation of what an emerging market is, South Africa is viewed as an ‘advanced emerging market’.

From the BRICS members, South Africa did have the least amount of representation, with nine universities ranked in the list. However, the inclusion of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), is a clear indication of how things are improving in the sphere of higher education.
