According to the SAPS’ Lieutenant Thulani Zwane , six vehicles and a building were set alight at UKZN’s Westville campus last night after around 200 students started rioting.

“They burnt six vehicles from the campus, threw stones at the police, vandalised the centre management office using stones and blocked the road,” Zwane said.

The Lieutenant said that at first, only 50 students blocked the road with burning tyres and 16 students, the youngest aged 17, have been arrested so far. They were charged with public violence and contravening a court order obtained by the University.

“They also threw stones at the passing by vehicles, but one came forward to report. We are appealing to the people whose cars were damaged to open the cases.”

“The suspects damaged the university property.”

News24 posted this video, showing the burning vehicles and carnage.

The newspaper also reported that a group of students last week burned the Howard College coffee shop and the Pietermaritzburg main exam hall.
