The United Independent Movement (UIM) says an Eskom state of disaster is just another way for President Cyril Ramaphosa and his government to loot the coffers.

“Cyril Ramaphosa wants to declare a state of disaster; he is talking about unity, family, biting the bullet, getting through the problems of this country, and solving the energy crisis. We are not listening to you anymore,” says UIM President Neil de Beer.

Ramaphosa revealed there were talks of an Eskom state of disaster at the ANC National Executive Committee Lekgotla on 30 January 2023.

“You are threatening the country with a state of emergency because your government failed to produce power. A state of emergency again gives you and your kabaal of ministers in the cabinet the right to make decisions on your own without the consent of parliament.”

Neil de Beer

De Beer said the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters are not real opposition parties because they allowed Ramaphosa to do whatever he wanted.

He said South Africans should not allow the president to do again what he has done with Covid-19, and that is to make sure they get “direct access to the money to loot”.

“This is an Eskom emergency crisis. Mr. President, why don’t you lock down Eskom? Lockdown Nersa, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, and Pravin Minister State enterprises.”

De Beer said the last state of disaster was a disaster. “Ramaphosa’s cabinet needs a state of emergency, not the country. Pull a state of emergency on yourself because the last one was a disaster in itself,” De Beer said.

Solidarity says a state of disaster over Eskom will result in large-scale corruption.

The trade union said the government’s inability to use its current power led to the crisis. It said a state of disaster would once again open the door to large-scale corruption and fraud.
