This led to some celebrities and journalists – and major public institutions opting not to sign up to the new Twitter Blue’s R200-per-month subscription service.

Many celebrities posted that they never signed up for the new subscription even though their verification status was restored.

Elon Musk has said he is personally paying for the verification status of some celebrities and high-profile figures, including Stephen King, LeBron James and William Schatner.

Living celebrities aren’t the only ones whose verification status has returned. Some legacy accounts of deceased high profiles have been restored verification.

Many high-profile entities on the social media platform are left unverified, and with the ability to be verified is available for purchase on subscription.

When Elon Musk first started offering blue check marks to Twitter Blue subscribers last year, users created fake accounts for high profiled accounts like LeBron James and Donald Trump.
