Tshwane cracks down, 7 more FIRED amid strike

On Tuesday, the City of Tshwane fired seven additional workers. Among them, six were suspected leaders of an unauthorised strike.

On Tuesday,15 August, the City of Tshwane fired seven additional workers amid the ongoing illegal strike by municipal workers.

This brings the count to 100 workers terminated since the strike commenced on July 28, 2023 stated The Citizen.

Since last month, workers from South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) have protested, seeking a 5.4% wage hike.

City of Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba revealed that six shop stewards, stationed at the Middestad Building in the CBD, alongside a seventh in Region 4, were fired for intimidation.

Upon receiving dismissal notices, the stewards reacted by littering the corridors of the Middestad Building reported IOL.

The City is also in the process of considering further employee dismissals.

Bokaba mentioned, “Intimidators now hide by wearing disguises like balaclavas, hats, caps, and shades.”

Last Tuesday, five Region 6 workers drove in a five-car convoy to the Waltloo Electricity Depot, intimidating others. Four of these were verified Samwu members.

To tackle the intimidation problem, the City will apprehend intimidators and urges those affected to consider pressing criminal charges.

A contempt plea in Labour Court was rejected, not due to the case’s validity but urgency. However, the July 28 interim injunction stands unaffected.

“The injunction remains. The court deemed the strike illegal, preventing intimidation and property damage,” Bokaba explained
