There are many things that unite us as a country, including the questions we are asked every day. Our interactions as South Africans help to make us who we are, and you have to be truly South African to be asked if you’d like to add some HOPE to your chicken meal.

Here are some of the weird questions ALL South Africans get asked, and why netizens from outside South Africa might have no clue what locals are on about.

Question 1: Do you have a Rewards Card?

In South Africa, it’s almost impossible to go shopping anywhere without this question being asked. Rewards Cards are big business for large companies, and for the consumer it means that they get access to some more exclusive deals – like bulk toilet paper for cheaper, something everyone could use in the household.

This doesn’t mean that everyone answers yes to the question, just that you will inevitably be asked about your rewards card before you’ve paid for your shopping.

What’s your answer going to be?

If you had a reward card for every store, how many would you have by now?

Question 2: Would you like to ADD HOPE?

It’s impossible to buy fried chicken at a certain retailer without being asked this question.

No, they’re not asking about how your day went. No, they’re not offering to give you hope for the future of the country. They’re asking you about your donation to the ADD HOPE initiative, which donates to linked charities every time someone answers yes.

Do you ever feel bad for saying NO to adding that extra bit of change to your meal?

Do you keep some of your spare change for those less fortunate who wait outside the restaurant?

Question 3: Plastic?

If you asked someone this question abroad, they’d respond by asking: ‘A plastic what?’

South Africans will know that this refers to plastic bags. When you’re finished with your shopping, you get to answer yes or no – and then usually pay for your plastic bags to carry your shopping home in.
