The iconic landscape that has come to define Cape Town has scooped yet another prestigious international award this week, after the Africa & Indian Ocean World Travel Awards named Table Mountain as the best tourist destination on the continent. In fact, there could be even more to come for the natural wonder, too…

Table Mountain sees off the competition

By winning this title, Table Mountain will also be in the running for “the best tourist destination in the world” in November 2019. It’s one hell of an achievement, given the competition that was facing South Africa’s most recognisable landmark. Other nominees included:

  • Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
  • Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
  • Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
  • Robben Island, South Africa (Cape Town)
  • V&A Waterfront, South Africa (Cape Town)

Why Table Mountain is officially “Africa’s best tourist destination”

The coveted accolade is awarded to attractions that go the extra mile. Being able to rely on natural beauty and engrossing entertainment is fine, but in this game, the whole customer experience is also taken into account.

Brilliance in client service is one of the biggest fields that the nominees have to excel in. The staff at Table Mountain National Park have brought home the title, due to their warm inter-personal skills that cater to the needs of all visitors. Table Mountain Cableway’s Managing Director Wahida Parker hailed those who had made the attraction such a success:

“Our responsibility is to provide a world-class bucket-list experience to local and international visitors. With over one million visitors a year complacency is not an option, and we constantly seek to improve our offering while remaining mindful of visitor’s variable needs.”

“It is because of our staff’s commitment to providing exceptional customer service that we have secured this honour. I would like to thank the travel and tourism professionals as well as visitors who cast their vote in our favour.”

Rain, shine, or snow, it’s the place to go

The wildly-popular destination has a year-round appeal, and it’s unique geographical quirks keep the punters flocking to the rock consistently. On a good day, you can see for almost 100km at the summit, which is more than a kilometre high. Please don’t forget your binoculars!

And, believe it or not, you might even see some snow when you get to the top. Brief flurries of the white stuff were spotted as recently as last year, and it makes for one of the most breathtaking scenes you’ll ever see!
