The SAPS VIP Protection Services, usually a low-profile unit, travelling in fast high-end black SUVs flashing blue lights, has gone viral for the wrong reasons.

SAPS VIP PROTECTION SERVICES MEMBERS IN HOT WATER

Armed SAPS VIP Protection Services officers made headlines after they were filmed assaulting occupants of a light motor vehicle in broad daylight over the weekend. The officers have been linked as members assigned to protect Deputy President Paul Mashatile whose office confirmed the incident but refuted claims that Mashatile was present during the incident.

THE CORE FUNCTION OF THIS UNIT

Contrary to this outrageous video, The South African looks at the real duties and responsibilities of SAPS VIP Protection Services members.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) protection programme, the VIP Protection Services members are assigned to provide protection and security services to all identified dignitaries and government interests.

Strategic objective is to Minimise security violations by protecting foreign and local prominent people and securing strategic interests.

Also, to minimise security violations by protecting the President, the Deputy President, former Presidents and other VIPs while in transit. As well as to minimise security violations of VIPs and their property, and other identified government buildings, as well as valuable cargo.

THE PROGRAMMES FOR THIS SERVICE

The Protection and Security Services Programme comprises five subprogrammes:

  1. VIP Protection Services provides for the protection, while in transit, of the President, Deputy President, former Presidents, and their spouses, and other identified VIPs.
  2. Static and Mobile Security is for protecting: other local and foreign VIPs; the places in which all VIPs including persons related to the President and the Deputy President, are present; and valuable government cargo.
  3. Ports of Entry Security provides for security at ports of entry and exit, such as border posts, airports and harbours.
  4. The Rail Police provides for security in the railway environment.
  5. The Government Security Regulator provides for security regulations, evaluations and the administration of National Key Points and strategic installations.
