Gwen Ramokgopa, the MEC for Health in Gauteng, has released startling statistics relating to negligence within state-run hospital facilities in the province.

According to Ramokgopa, more than 20 000 patients have been harmed in government-administered health facilities over the past 28 months.

Sowetan Live first reported on the worrying revelations admitted by Ramokgopa, when the MEC was questioned on the state of local health systems in the Gauteng region, by Democratic Alliance (DA) MPL, Jack Bloom.

‘Serious Adverse Events’

This is the term used to describe negligence on behalf of medical staff, who, when attending to patients, aggravate underlying conditions resulting in severe trauma or harm.

There has been 20 417 ‘Serious Adverse Events’ recorder since 2016.

Commenting on the calamity of current health standards in the province, Bloom said:

“Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the most dangerous hospital for patients in Gauteng‚ with 4 320 recorded (incidents). The shockingly high number of harmful events to patients highlights the crisis in public health that is driving up medical negligence cases which lead to huge court-ordered payouts.”

Ramokgopa acknowledged the severity of the issue within the public health system, admitting that most cases were related to:

“Allegations of negligence‚ incompetence of staff members‚ human errors‚ secondment of patients and system failure.”
