The Democratic Alliance (DA) sincerely thanks former Eskom chief André de Ruyter for his three-year service as Eskom’s chief executive officer (CEO).

DA WISHES DE RUYTER WELL

Ghaleb Cachalia, MP – DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, thanked De Ruyter. During his tenure as Eskom CEO, De Ruyter increased levels of maintenance, dented debt, and pushed for a shift towards renewable energy with a firm hand on the once-flagship utility.

The DA says De Ruyter bravely targeted coal theft syndicates and sabotage at Eskom, resulting in an attempt on his life.

“We commend his bravery, especially in the television interview this week where he lifted the veil on the large-scale corruption at Eskom,” says Cachalia.

ESKOM RELEASES ITS CEO WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

Eskom announced on Wednesday, 22 February 2023, that De Ruyter leaves Eskom with immediate effect.

This decision follows after a shocking revelation by De Ruyter in an interview with e. TV’s journalist Annika Larsen, in a show, titled My Guest.

ANC HAS NO POLITICAL WILL TO END CORRUPTION

“I expressed my concern to a senior government minister about attempts, in my view, to water down governance around the $8.5 billion (R154.6bn), that largely through Eskom’s intervention we received at COP26.”

De Ruyter said he did not believe the government had the political will to end corruption within the power utility.

Cachalis says De Ruyter is a true patriot, and we wish him success in the future. He said it is telling that no one in government has seen fit to thank him for his efforts – evidence of the total conflation of state and party.

“As he leaves, another acting CEO will fill his role without any institutional knowledge of the kind De Ruyter has nor any proper handover while the country is in Stage 7 of load shedding. This was confirmed by the Eskom spokesperson who announced the cutting of 7 045 megawatts of power late on Tuesday to keep the grid from a total collapse.”
