Authorities say highly trained officers will be guarding convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria, Gauteng.

Bester and his alleged lover Dr Nandipha Magudumana were deported from Tanzania and landed in South Africa in the early hours of Thursday, 13 April at the Lanseria Airport also in Gauteng.

THABO BESTER UNDER 24/7 SURVEILLANCE

Bester was taken to the C-Max at Kgosi Mampuru II Prison while Magudumana was taken to Bloemfontein.

During the briefing on Thursday morning, National Commissioner of the Department of Justice and Correctional Services Makgothi Thobakgale said given the type of offender that Bester is they have decided to place him under 24/7 surveillance.

“We have different sections, we then chose to accommodate him at C-Max because we’re also looking at the intensity of the security and the contact that we need to manage around him given the type of offender he is,” Thobakgale explained.

Furthermore he said Bester will be guarded by highly trained Correctional Services officials.

NANDIPHA MAGUDUMANA APPEARS IN COURT

Meanwhile, Magudumana appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court alongside Teboho Lipholo, a technician contracted at the Mangaung Correctional Centre where Bester escaped.

The State requested that the matter be postponed to Monday, 17 April, so the accused, who did not plead, can appear alongside accused 1 and 2 in the matter, which is Magudumana’s father, Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni, and former G4S guard Senohe Ishmael Matsoara.

Sekeleni and Matsoara were charged with arson, fraud and defeating the ends of justice and murder.
