Residents in the affected areas, spanning from Pelican Park to Eagle Park and beyond, are advised of temporary water discolouration or a milky appearance following emergency repair works by the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate.

The completion of installation on a new water pipe in Parkwood signifies progress toward restoring water supply after a significant disruption.

While gradual restoration is in progress, officials reassure the public that the discolouration issue, caused by trapped air in the pipes, will resolve itself shortly.

Vandalism disrupts Cape Town water supply, prompts repairs

The disruption stemmed from a vandalised valve on the 915mm diameter bulk reticulation water main in Blackbird Avenue, necessitating swift action to safeguard the city’s water supply infrastructure. As a result, residents in various communities, including Masiphumelele in the Deep South, encountered water supply interruptions.

Expressing gratitude for residents’ patience during the emergency repair efforts, Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, apologised for the inconvenience caused and underscored the necessity of prompt action to mitigate the impact on the affected areas.

“Thank you to all our residents for their patience while the emergency work was taking place. The City apologises for the inconvenience caused to all affected residents.

“We are aware that this has impacted a large area of the city. However, responding to and repairing this vandalism quickly has been necessary for the city to do to protect our water supply infrastructure.,” said Councillor Badroodien.

Ward councillors keep communities informed with regular updates

Efforts to maintain communication with residents continue through regular updates issued via ward councillors. This is to ensure transparency and keeping the community informed of progress.

Acknowledging the collaborative effort involved in the repair process, Councillor Badroodien extended appreciation to various City departments. Also community leaders for their support in managing the situation and maintaining calm among residents.

“Thank you also to the community leadership for helping to keep residents informed and calm under the circumstances.”

Residents are reminded that all sites undergoing water and sanitation repairs are designated construction zones. There are therefore off-limits to the public. Adherence to these guidelines ensures the safety and efficiency of ongoing restoration efforts.
