JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – January 30: Eskom chairman Jabu Mabuza, CEO Phakamani Hadebe and acting Financial Officer Calib Cassim during the interim results announcement at Megawatt Park on January 30, 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Hadebe alleged that increased levels of irregular expenditure at the power utility are a consequence of poor leadership.

On Tuesday morning, Brigadier-General Tebogo Rakau (who is Eskom’s divisional executive for security in the Office of the Chief Executive) has announced that he has officially stepped down from his post with immediate effect.

How long has Tebogo Rakau worked for Eskom?

Rakau had been a senior staff officer in the office of the Chief of the South African National Defence Force and had occupied the position of chief of security at Transnet Freight Rail.

He was appointed to work for the power utility on 22 October 2015, by the controversial Brian Molefe, Eskom’s Group Chief Executive at the time.

In 2015, sources allegedly told the Mail & Guardian that it was believed that his primary function was to unmask those responsible for exposing misdeeds at the company.

What is the motivation behind Tebogo Rakau’s resignation?

Rakau was still acting in his position as late as last week when he provided comments to the media on the effects of infrastructure theft on Eskom’s ability to outsource power to the country.

His resignation comes suddenly and is with immediate effect. Sources allege that it may have something to do with an internal investigation Rakau was facing.

Eskom’s silence about Tebogo’s resignation

Khulu Phasiwe, the spokesperson for Eskom, hasn’t answered questions about Rakau’s reasons for resigning or the cause of the internal investigation.

Phasiwe made it very clear that under strict confidentiality agreements, Eskom can’t discuss certain things. He added that

“Eskom is not at liberty to disclose employer-employee contractual matters with third parties”

The secrecy around the resignation has surely raised many eyebrows since the power utility’s past issues have always been dealt with in the public forum. Rakau’s team has not come forward to shed more light on the issue.

Also, as of yet, there are no indications that this was a direct result of the rumoured internal investigation surrounding Rakau.
