In a bid to ensure pubs and bars remain safe and open the National Liquor Traders (NLT) in partnership with Heineken SA launched a tavern compliance programme in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.

The campaign will also cover East London as well Gqeberha where liquor traders will be educated on Covid-19 compliance related matters. Working together with the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, the tavern compliance campaign also seeks to empower liquor traders to take a lead and champion compliance in the communities they operate in.

Lucky Ntimane, convener of the National Liquor Traders said:

“It remains critical for our liquor traders to take a stand in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and further commit to working with government to ensure that our actions are supportive of all efforts that government is championing to managing the pandemic. Our role therefore is to ensure that our places of trade remain compliant to all Covid-19 protocols as we also encourage our patrons to practice non-pharmaceutical interventions in the form of mask wearing, sanitizing and observing social distancing.”

Ntimane said “this is not just a government’s fight but one that requires a society wide approach and as liquor traders we are ready to play our part.”

Heineken SA Corporate Affairs Director Millicent Maroga said: “We remain committed as Heineken SA to supporting out traders and we further encourage them to comply with all the Covid-19 regulations. We see this initiative in the Eastern Cape as a step in the right direction in ensuring that liquor traders are empowered to trading in a responsible manner.”

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) CEO Dr Nombuyiselo Makala said the board welcomed the partnership with NLT and Heineken SA to drive the agenda of Covid-19 compliance.

“The commitment shown by liquor traders in complying with the relevant regulations as it pertains to Covid-19 will go a long way in ensuring that liquor traders provide safe and healthy environment that arrest the spread of the virus in those spaces,” Makala said.

Partnerships between corporates, civil society, communities, SAPS, Eastern Cape Liquor Board and local government is what is required to deal decisively with the pandemic.
