Five armed robbery suspects are set to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court for unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition and possession of stolen property.

This comes after police officers swooped on the suspects who had allegedly stolen the vehicle during a house robbery in Montclair.

Regional SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said that the suspects, aged between 18 and 21 were expected to appear in court to face the charges this week.

Gwala said a multidisciplinary police operation had been conducted in the Durban Central CBD which had led to the arrest of all five armed suspects. The police officers recovered several illegal firearms and ammunition at the scene of the arrest on Monday.

“During the operation, police officials came across a vehicle with five male occupants on Pine Street. The vehicle did not have a rear registration plate,” Gwala said.

Gwala said the officers had intercepted the vehicle and conducted a search.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered two pistols with ammunition, a toy gun and stolen bank cards. The suspects were arrested and transported to Durban Central SAPS for processing,” Gwala said.

She said the police investigation had so far revealed that the suspects had allegedly stolen the vehicle during a house robbery in Montclair.

“The vehicle was impounded for further investigation. The suspects will be profiled to check if they are linked to other serious and violent cases committed in Durban and surrounding areas,” Gwala added.

Meanwhile Chatsworth police have called on the public to help them locate a missing person.
