Suspect opens fire at a Mthatha tavern

Police are on the lookout for a trigger happy gunman who opened fire at a tavern in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape

Police in the Eastern Cape are on a manhunt for a murder suspect, responsible for fatally shooting two and injuring at least another three persons in a tavern in Maqhinebeni A/A Mthatha.

It is alleged that the unknown suspect entered the tavern and started shooting at patrons just before midnight on Saturday evening.

POLICE SEEK ASSISTANCE FROM COMMUNITY

So far, police have managed to trace five victims that were shot. One person died on the scene while another died in hospital. The three injured( 2 males and a female) were transported by private transport to hospital.

Law enforcement has called on the community to assist in locating the gunman. They have also called on witnesses and patrons who were at the tavern and were injured or shot at to come forward.

‘The community plays a pivotal role in assisting police on the whereabouts of criminals. These criminals are living among the communities and we need them to be our ‘eyes and ears’ in order to arrest perpetrators such as this and to bring them to justice”, says Provincial Commissioner Nomthetheleli Mene.

“Innocent people are being targeted and we cannot allow such a cold hearted criminal to roam our streets and cause more harm to law abiding citizens. Therefore, he must be arrested in the shortest time possible.”

FREE STATE TAVERN SHOOTING

A similar incident occurred last month in the Free State, when police were summoned to a tavern after suspects opened fire at a tavern.

Multiple victims sustained gunshot wounds, with one man fatally wounded with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

A 72 hour trace, lead to the arrests of two suspects who faced a charge of murder and attempted murder.
