Suspect nabbed for the murder of an elderly woman
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the swift response by the police and also thanked the community for their assistance

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape have arrested a man in connection with the alleged murder of a 79-year-old woman.
The woman was found dead inside her home in Woodhouse, by a neighbour, who then called police.
“The arrest followed the discovery of the body of a 79-year-old woman at her home in Woodhouse earlier. It is alleged that the neighbour who went to the old woman’s home made the discovery. The neighbour immediately called the police. A Task Team, led by Captain Litha Mfundisi started following up the leads and with the assistance of the community tracked the suspect in the area”, said SAPS spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci in a statement on Sunday, 19 July 2020.
Suspect arrested
The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and will appear in Cofimvaba Magistrate Court on Monday 20 July 2020 on a charge of murder. No word from police on how the suspect is linked to the victim or crime itself.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the swift response by the police and also thanked the community for their assistance. “Crimes against women and children remain the priority of the police. The detectives will oppose bail in this case. The assistance of the community is applauded”, she said.
The incident comes a week after police arrested a 27-year-old man for alleged murder of another man at Ntilini Locality, Centule Village, Centane.
“Centane Police arrested a 27-year old man for alleged murder of a 25-year old man. It is alleged that the suspect was fighting with another man on Tuesday, 07 July 2020 at about 16h00 at Ntilini Locality, Centule Village, Centane”, police said in a separate statement.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Bonani Jika had intervened in an attempt to put an end to the situation, but was unfortunately stabbed in the chest by one of the men.
“The 25-year old man intervened and the suspect allegedly stabbed him on his upper body. He was rushed to Tafalofefe Hospital where he later passed away. The murder was reported to Centane Police who acted swiftly by tracing and arresting the suspect on Wednesday, 08 July 2020”
The suspect subsequently appeared before the Centane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 10 July 2020, where he was charged with Jika’s murder.
