The two University of Johannesburg students were on a campus bus heading home to their residence when a taxi related shootout occurred in Braamfontein.

While Nxumalo didn’t make it, Mosia is currently recovering at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.

Two taxi bosses were also killed.

In his briefing, Nzimande revealed that 18-year-old Nxumalo hailed from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal and is the youngest of six children.

“This is a NFSAS beneficiary, a Bachelor of Commence Accounting student, this was a future CA. When we send our children to university, we want to fetch them in their gowns and we want to celebrate them, not in coffins” says Nzimande.

The Minister has condemned the violence and has called on government to address escalatng crime.

“The violence in society is also affecting the universities. This shows as a society we have a challenge and the government needs to intensify the fight against crime.

“We understand this is a result of taxi-linked violence. It’s a strange occurrence that teaches us that life can be so unpredictable.”
