It was only a matter of time: ActionSA member Bongani Baloyi and his former Democratic Alliance (DA) boss Hellen Zille exchanged some words on Twitter on Tuesday evening, 8 February 2022.

Baloyi confronted Zille on the social media app over an interview she did with eNCA that evening. It’s no secret that several DA members jumped ship to join ActionSA, which was founded by Herman Mashaba, also a former member of the blue party.

HELEN ZILLE VS BONGANI BALOYI

Never one to hold back, Helen Zille, who is the DA’s Federal Council Chair, had a lot to say about ActionSA and Bongani Baloyi, who resigned from the party in December 2021, to join Mashaba.

Zille told the broadcaster that Baloyi would regret jumping ship sooner rather than later, citing several reasons, including how ActionSA is being run.

“Hi [Helen Zille], whether I regret joining [ActionSA] in 6 months or 12 months is none of your business. Stop infantilising me, I am not your child, I decide what to do with my life,” Baloyi wrote on Twitter.

Well, Zille didn’t take the tweet lying down, replying: “Who said you can’t decide what to do with your life?  You only infantalise yourself by seeking to protect your decision from legitimate comment by others.”

At first, Baloyi had claimed there was no bad blood between him and the DA leadership and that he was merely exploring other opportunities, but in an interview with the Sunday Times, he claimed that the DA “became extremely toxic”. He also explained that he no longer had any belief in what the party was trying to achieve.

About his move, Zille would later say: “I last saw Bongani late 2021 in Jozi, at his request, to discuss his plans for his future DA career trajectory. It was, as always, amicable and pleasant. I have never had one unpleasant interaction with Bongani. Quite the contrary. My prediction? I think he will regret his move”
