An estimated 12 000 murders were committed in 2018/19, which have affected 0,07% of households in South Africa, this data is fresh from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) in their Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2018/19 report.

What is the gap between Stats SA vs SAPS stats for murder in the same year?

All affected households reported incidences of murder to the police, however, there is a huge gap between Stats SA fresh data; and the South African Police Services (SAPS) recent 2018/2019 annual crime statistics.

According to SAPS data, there were 32 000 murders during the same period, and Nyanga police station remains prominent for recorded murder cases.

Cape Town is home to the precinct with the scariest statistics recorded for murder in South Africa, as data also proves the Nyanga has been the county’s murder capital since 2014, with more than 270 reported cases of murder each year.

Western Cape remains famous for murder as four stations from the province are recorded in the top five rankings of this category; more victims of murder were killed with guns and knives than any other weapon.

Why is there a huge gap between the stats SA and crime statistics?

The main reason for the huge gap between GPSJS estimates of murder and SAPS statistics is that GPSJS estimates are based on murders that are known to households in South Africa.

SAPS, on the other hand, handles murders that may be unknown to homes as their stats include incidents such as the murders of homeless people, immigrants, temporary visitors, gang-related and other ‘Jane-Doe’ murders across the country.

What is the total record for murder in South Africa?

In the past year, there has been a total of 20 575 murders, with most occurring on a Sunday, around midnight and 3:00. It is predicted to be a lapse from Saturday night, as 4 881 murders were recorded for Saturday from 21:00 to 23:59, and 5 159 for Sunday, during the breaking of a new day.

Cases of attempted murder have also increased on the South African Police Services data

Crime statistics further proves that attempted murder cases have increased by 4,1%. Reported cases of attempted murder have increased by 4,1%, while 13 360 of these reported cases include guns as the chosen weapons, and around 3 700 of these cases are reported to have taken place in Gauteng in the past year alone.
