While load shedding is likely to be part of South African households for the longest of time, a SPAR branch has come up with a perfect menu to suit the ‘occasion’.

SPAR Rodindale in Johannesburg has come up with a special menu called Load Shedding Menu which seeks to cater for locals who are unable to cook because of the constant blackouts.

“Our new and improved Load Shedding Menu is here,” the SPAR announced on its page, adding that their menu also included vegan options.

The Load Shedding menu includes a variety of treats, most ranging from R200 to R350.

Some of the options are: 4x Spinach and Feta Stuffed Chicken Breast wrapped in Beacon with a Sweet Chilli sauce, served with 600g of creamed spinach and 600g roasted potatoes (feeds four people).

Another option, 1x whole roasted chicken served with 800g of seasoned roasted potato wedges and a large gourmet greek salad (feeds 4 people).

According to SPAR, a 24-hour notice is required as all dishes are prepared fresh from scratch. Orders are made in person or telephonically.

This innovative idea by SPAR has been greatly received by the patrons, many suggesting the idea was clever.

As it stands, load shedding is set to return during the evenings.

Business Tech reported that the Power utility Eskom says it will be moving back load shedding during the evening peak period after weeks of near 24-hour schedules.

The group said it would remain at stage 3 load shedding on Friday (15 July) until midnight, with stage 2 load shedding coming into effect again on Saturday and Sunday between 16h00 and 00h00.
This schedule will continue throughout next week unless something changes, it said.
