The police in the Western Cape arrested eight suspects in connection with Post Office robberies this week. Cash was stolen from Post Offices in Caledon and De Doorns on Tuesday, 11 January.

POLICE MAKE ARRESTS

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the province  Colonel Andre Traut said armed robbers hit Caledon Post Office in Plein Street at approximately 11:00 and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash in a VW Golf.

“Eager to bring the perpetrators of a post office robbery in Caledon to book, SAPS members pursued all avenues until the suspects were apprehended,” said the police spokesperson.

The police investigation led them to Zwelihle in Hermanus where four suspects – aged between 24 and 35 – were arrested in possession of the stolen cash and an unlicensed pistol. The getaway vehicle was also confiscated.

“Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their court appearance in Caledon to face charges of business robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Traut.

Also on Tuesday, four suspects were arrested and a fifth was killed in a motor vehicle accident following an alleged Post Office robbery in De Doorns.

According to the police, the suspects’ getaway vehicle flipped over during a high-speed chase. Three unlicensed firearms and stolen cash and SASSA cards were recovered.
