Mixed news for SA motorists: The wholesale diesel price will be lowered at midnight on Tuesday, 2 May, but petrol is getting more expensive.

National Treasury on Tuesday gazetted the design specifications for South Africa’s new coins, which will enter circulation later in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice and Correctional Services has given G4S 90 days to wrap up everything at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

In other news, approximately 120 000 birds have died or have been culled since avian influenza was detected at two commercial layer farms in the Paardeberg area in the Western Cape. The provincial Department of Agriculture is advising the public and farming sector to remain vigilant.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has published the official fuel price adjustments for May 2023.

Petrol prices will be increasing by 37 cents per litre, while diesel will be coming down by between 48 cents and 74 cents per litre.

South Africa to get new 10c to R5 coins in 2023 – HAVE A LOOK

National Treasury on Tuesday, 2 May gazetted the design specifications for South Africa’s new coins, which will enter circulation later in 2023.

The gazette amends schedule 2 of the South African Reserve Bank Act, 1989, which deals with the denomination, description, composition, sizes and allowable deviations in South Africa’s circulation coins and special coins like Krugerrands.

BREAKING: Correctional Services to terminate G4S contract

The Department of Justice and Correctional Services has reportedly served Bloemfontein Correctional Contracts (BCC) which subcontracted private security company G4S, with notice to terminate its contract for the Mangaung Correctional Centre where convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escaped.

G4S is responsible for the Mangaung Prison and a number of its former prison guards have been arrested in connection with Bester’s escape.

Western Cape farmers advised to stay vigilant as avian flu forces culling of 120k birds

Approximately 120 000 birds have died or have been culled since avian influenza was detected at two commercial layer farms in the Paardeberg area in the Western Cape. The provincial Department of Agriculture is advising the public and farming sector to remain vigilant.

The affected farms are egg-laying chicken farms in the Drakenstein and Swartland Local Municipalities. The first avian influenza outbreak was confirmed on Friday, 21 April, and the second on Tuesday, 25 April.

Suspects allegedly behind attacks on Intercape buses arrested

Two suspects who were arrested in connection with the attacks on Intercape buses were expected to appear before the Cofimvaba Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 2 May on charges relating to assault, robbery and malicious damage to property. 

A number of Intercape buses have been attacked in the Eastern Cape and according to a report there are more than 160 incidents.
