MASSIVE cyclone to bring cold fronts to SA THIS WEEK

According to the Severe Weather and Information Centre SA, the latest satellite and synoptic images as of today, 23 May, reveal a massive mid-latitude cyclone positioned southwest of South Africa; the tail end of the cold front associated with the system is expected to bring adverse weather conditions.

On Thursday, an intense cold front is expected to bring the following adverse weather conditions:

  • Cold temperatures
  • Moderate to heavy rain
  • Potential thunderstorms
  • Srong winds
  • Rough sea conditions

Western Cape weather: Cold front to bring up to 80mm of rain

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 3 warning for rain in the Western Cape on Tuesday, 23 May. The weather warning key indicates a very low likelihood of significant weather impacts.

The rain warning is valid from 00:00 until 23:59 on Thursday, 25 May. The rain will be brought by a cold front associated with an intense upper air system.

The cold front is expected to result in heavy rain and showers over the Western Cape’s southwestern parts starting Wednesday evening into Thursday.

No cholera detected in Hammanskraal water samples

The City of Tshwane says results from sampling testing taken from multiple sites around Temba and Hammanskraal pertaining to tracing the cholera outbreak came back negative. 

This comes as at least 15 people have died from cholera including two children aged three and nine. 

The City of Tshwane said multiple reservoirs, fire hydrants, primary schools, clinics and other locations that receive water from the Temba Treatment Plant were tested.

Ramaphosa opts not to challenge the section 89 Phala Phala report

President Cyril Ramaphosa will no longer challenge the Section 89 report in court, which called for his impeachment over Phala Phala, as Parliament has dealt with the matter.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the parliamentary process in December rendered any legal process moot.

Opposition political parties had tried to revive the motion after the report was rejected by the ANC in Parliament, but failed.
