We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Tuesday, 13 December 2022.

The African National Congress (ANC) has now expelled Carl Niehaus for misconduct after the party’s national disciplinary committee (NDC) found Niehaus found guilty on six counts of contravening rule 25 of the ANC’s constitution.

In other news, former spy boss Arthur Fraser is reportedly in hiding in the wake of an apparent plot to have him killed – and it all has to do with the Phala Phala saga, according to The Sunday Independent that is. 

It’s no secret that Fraser lifted the lid on the robbery on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Limpopo farm by reporting the incident to local police.

Weather warnings for SEVERE thunderstorms, hail, and winds were issued for MOST of SA on Monday afternoon. 

The search for an off-duty cop swept away in Soweto during floods that battered parts of Gauteng ended tragically.

And in some sad news, a horrific crash between a truck and a minibus taxi on the N1 in Free State has claimed the lives of 13 people, including four children.

BREAKING: Carl Niehaus EXPELLED by ANC for misconduct

The African National Congress (ANC) has now expelled Carl Niehaus for misconduct after the party’s national disciplinary committee (NDC) found Niehaus found guilty on six counts for contravening rule 25 of the ANC’s constitution.

Niehaus had been on suspension for comments he made outside former president Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead back in July 2021, ahead of his arrest for contempt of court. The transgressions against Niehaus are all detailed in a report signed by the NDC chairperson Ralph Mgijimi dated 12 December.

The ANC NDC wrote that in making his remarks about Zuma and the ANC, Carl Niehaus brought the ruling party into disrepute and deliberately put false information into the public domain to cause confusion and disunity in the ANC.

Plot to kill Arthur Fraser, Zuma’s lawyer over Phala Phala – report

Former spy boss Arthur Fraser is reportedly in hiding, in the wake of an apparent plot to have him killed – and it all has to do with the Phala Phala saga, according to The Sunday Independent that is. It’s no secret that it was Fraser who lifted the lid on the robbery which occurred on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Limpopo farm by reporting the incident to local police.

Since then, the saga has been hanging over Ramaphosa’s head, even prompting him to consider resigning. According to The Sunday Independent, Fraser was offered a whopping R50 million from a Cape Town underworld boss to make the case “go away” – an offer he refused and has since been at an undisclosed location.

Severe thunderstorms, HAIL and winds expected NOW in most of SA – find your area here

The SA Weather Services (SAWS) issued a level 5 warning for SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS with HAIL for parts of the Western Cape, Gauteng, Free State, and North West for Monday afternoon. 

Weather warnings were issued for most of South Africa on Monday afternoon.

The SAWS warned that damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles, communication disruption and loss of agricultural production is possible.

SAPS mourns off-duty cop swept away during Soweto floods

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has sent his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of a cop who drowned in Soweto on Friday, 9 December. 

The off-duty police officer’s body was recovered on Sunday morning, 11 December, in Soweto.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), floods swept the off-duty member’s private vehicle. The floods were caused by heavy downpours which battered parts of Gauteng on Friday.

LOOK: Four children amongst 13 dead in horrific Free State crash

At least 13 people including four children have died in a horrific crash on N1 highway between Winburg and Verkeerdevlei, Free State. 

The crash between a minibus taxi and a tuck reportedly happened in the early hours of Monday, 12 December. 

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the Volvo truck was driving north on the N1 and the Toyota Quantum south when they collided head-on. Initially, 11 people were declared dead on the scene and three others were rushed to hospital, however, the death toll has since risen to 13.
