We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 30 June 2023.

The snow and icy weather turn parts of South Africa into a winter wonderland. 

Meanwhile, severe weather wreaked havoc in KZN, claiming the lives of at least four individuals. Dozens of homes have also been destroyed.

There is a LION on the loose on the N1 near the town of Beaufort West. Have you seen the LION? 

In other news, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the eThekwini District says various disciplines from the force and other security agencies will be on high alert and deployed at the Hollywoodbets Durban July at the Greyville Racecourse. 

The prestigious event will take place on Saturday, 1 July 2023.

And lastly, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Gauteng around 03:15 on Thursday, 29 June.

This comes just two weeks after another quake which caused extensive damage, was reported also in Gauteng.

WATCH: Snow, icy weather turn parts of SA into winter wonderland

The snow and icy weather turn parts of South Africa into a winter wonderland. 

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that extreme COLD conditions, rain, and snow conditions are expected for the remainder of this week.

 SIGNIFICANT snow of more than 10cm is likely on Wednesday over Lesotho and the southern Drakensberg continuing into Thursday morning.

WATCH: There’s a LION on the loose in Beaufort West

There is a lion on the loose on the N1 near the town of Beaufort West.

The lion was first spotted on the N1 N1 north of Beaufort-Wes, near the Loxton off-ramp this week.

In the video, taken by a traffic officer, a lion can be seen walking up and down next to the fence. While not much information is available yet, motorists, pedestrians, and anybody cycling are cautioned to be alert and avoid the area.

KZN weather: Storm death toll rises to four, more people missing

At least four people have died as a result of the severe weather in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the provincial department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs said in its latest update.

According to SABC News, one of the victims was swept away while in a vehicle in Pinetown, and the bodies of two more victims were found in Cato Manor and Glen Ashley, respectively. No details were provided for the fourth victim.

One person has been confirmed missing in Verulam, while there are further reports of six missing people in the Cato Manor area.

Durban July: Attendees urged to be on the lookout for criminals

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the eThekwini District says various disciplines from the force and other security agencies will be on high alert and deployed at the Hollywoodbets Durban July at the Greyville Racecourse. 

The prestigious event will take place on Saturday, 1 July 2023.

SAPS spokesperson in  the district Captain Carmen Rhynes said a proactive approach, which resulted in successful events being hosted previously has been adopted for this event.

Another 2.9 magnitude earthquake reported in Johannesburg

A 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Gauteng around 03:15 on Thursday, 29 June.

This comes just two weeks after another quake which caused extensive damage was reported also in Gauteng.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the earthquake was nine kilometres south-south-east of Alberton.
