Ukraine: Table Mountain is changing colours tonight – here’s why

Cape Town residents will undoubtedly notice the iconic Table Mountain sporting a slightly different look this evening, with shades of blue and yellow set to adorn the slopes leading into the city bowl. This as the Western Cape Province Parliament (WCPP) and DA leader John Steenhuisen demonstrate support for the people of Ukraine, where the Russian military is currently laying siege to cities across the eastern European state.

Steenhuisen is set to deliver an address in tandem with the lighting of the mountain on Monday evening.

Steenhuisen said on Monday that Russia’s decision to invade the sovereign state of Ukraine is indicative of a nation hell-bent on inciting war without provocation. He labelled Russian President Vladimir Putin a “despot” and wholeheartedly condemned the ongoing violence threatening the lives of millions of innocent Ukrainian civilians.

“Russia is now a global pariah state thanks to the ruthless warmongering of its despotic leader. It has run out of friends and allies, and rightly so,” he said.

Weather: Yet another thunderstorm warning issued for the Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape. The forecaster said the inclement weather was the result of a cut-off low and a surface trough.

The weather service said the surface trough and cut-off low is expected to form over the west of the country and bring good chances of rain and thunderstorms across the Eastern Cape.

“There are better chances over the interior, where these storms may become severe and result in minor impacts due to heavy downpours, strong damaging winds and excessive lightning,” said SAWS.

The affected district municipalities include Sarah Baartman, Amathole, parts of Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi, Tambo and Alfred Nzo.
