De Klerk memorial service: Ramaphosa to deliver the eulogy

After the fake #DeKlerkMemorialService went viral on Twitter a few weeks ago, the actual state FW de Klerk memorial service is set to take place this weekend. Unlike the one on Twitter, this one is likely to be without jokes and people singing their favourite Afrikaans songs. In fact, President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the state organised event on Sunday.

After the last apartheid president’s death on the 11th of November, it became clear that a state funeral would not be held. Instead, the family opted for a small private event. Government showed no signs of holding a memorial service for de Klerk either. But it’s clear things have now changed. This week, the presidency revealed that a state memorial service would be held for de Klerk in Cape Town.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the eulogy at the de Klerk memorial service in Cape Town on Sunday. The event is being held at 10:30AM at the Groote Kerk in the Cape Town civic centre.

Interpol arrest Portuguese fugitive in KZN

Interpol’s National Crime Bureau in Pretoria has arrested a wanted Portuguese fugitive in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban. Joao Manuel de Oliveira Rendeiro is a convicted fraudster who has been on the run from the Portuguese government.

So what did de Oliveira Rendeiro do? He absconded from the Portuguese government and made a run to South Africa. He was convicted of multi-million dollar fraud and hit with a 12-year prison sentence. Before he could start serving his time, he escaped.

During an Interpol General Assembly meeting in Turkey last month, SAPS Commissioner Khehla Sithole was informed that the fugitive was hiding out in KZN. Our authorities then promised their Portuguese counterparts that they would handle the situation.

ANC used for jobs: Thabo Mbeki rips into his party

Thabo Mbeki is a former South African and ANC president. He’s also not known for shying away from being critical of his own party. Well, Mbeki has done exactly that again. This time, while delivering the 2021 Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture on Friday evening.

Mbeki began by highlighting an admission made by Nelson Mandela in 1997. The ANC has a problem with dealing with members who join the party for personal gain.

According to Mbeki, the ANC’s declining support at the polls is directly linked to the deteriorating quality of the ANC’s membership. And it’s not just in the last few years, Mbeki is talking about as far back as 2006.

“This means on average it [the ANC] lost 4.7% support on each election, this, the continuous degradation and the quality of the membership of the ANC emphasizes that all ANC conferences for two decades, for the two decades between 1997 and 2019 contributed directly to the sustained loss of electoral support by the ANC.”

Severely mutilated white rhino cow euthanized in Kruger National Park

A rhino cow in the Kruger National Park (KNP) had to be euthanised after she was shot several times and left severely mutilated after her horn was brutally hacked off.

KNP spokesperson Isaac Phaahla said the injured white rhino was found on Saturday morning.

“According to the SANParks Veterinarian and the Section Ranger who attended to the rhino, it appeared as if the animal had been shot a few days prior to being found. Bullet wounds were visible in her head and foreleg, and there were open wounds to her nasal cavity where her horn had been brutally hacked off. There were additional injuries to the lower back, presumably dealt to stun her,” Phaahla said.

He said they are aware of a video circulating on social media depicting the severely injured white rhino cow and warned that the video is distressing to watch.
