President Cyril Ramaphosa abandoned his Nation Address to conduct a site visit in the Joburg CBD where people lost their lives in a building fire.

Usindiso Building, located at No. 80 Alberts Street in Marshalltown, caught alight and claimed a total of 73 lives, including children.

After 72 hours, the Human Settlements department will advise on where they will be taken to once all logistics and related verifications have been finalised. At this stage, it is believed a total of 200 or more families were resident at the Building.

Meanwhile, amidst a gathering of cherished friends, family, and admirers, the morning’s memorial for the iconic TV host, Derek Watts, echoed with a daughter Kirsty’s heartfelt words.

A 10-year-old boy has miraculously survived a vicious attack by dogs that are kept inside the school. 

And lastly, Busisiwe Mkhwebane may lose a R10million ‘golden handshake’ if she is fired. Her contract ends mid-October.

President Cyril Ramaphosa abandoned his Nation Address to conduct a site visit in the Joburg CBD where people lost their lives in a building fire.

Upon President Cyril Ramaphosa’s arrival, he was welcomed by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi alongside City of Johannesburg officials and councillors.

Johannesburg fire: Death toll increases to 73, cause still unknown

The death toll in the fire that tore through a building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg has increased to 73.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Services confirmed that the fire broke out in the early hours on Thursday, 31 August.

As previously reported by The South African, the fire occurred at a five-storey building on the corners of Alberts and Delvers streets in Marshalltown.

INSIDE Joburg CBD fire briefing: About 200 families occupied the building

City of Johannesburg City Manager Floyd Brink held a press briefing this afternoon, Thursday, 31 August to provide the latest update on the deadly fire at the Joburg CBD building.

Usindiso Building, located at No. 80 Alberts Street in Marshalltown caught alight and claimed a total of 73 lives, including children.

“At this stage, we can confirm that as of 14:00 this afternoon, Sixty-One (61) people were treated at various medical facilities in and around the City. Sixteen (16) have been discharged and Seventeen (17) remain admitted at this stage with the rest still receiving care at the Casualty Units,” he explained.

A 10-year-old MAULED by dogs IN SCHOOL

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has called for an urgent investigation into the vicious attack on a grade five learner by dogs on school premises.

ALSO READ: Dinokeng Game Reserve to euthanise lions who mauled employee to death

The dogs which are kept in the school, mauled the 10 year old boy at iXopo Village Intermediate last week Tuesday, which lead to him requiring a number of stitch around his head and body.

Mkhwebane fighting for R10million gratuity

Outgoing Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has not taken the Section 194 Committee recommendation to the National Assembly to have her removed from office lying down.

Last week the Section 194 Committee officially adopted their report which found her guilty of misconduct and incompetence.

Should she be fired, she forfeits a R10million gratuity, which is given to a Public Protector at the end of their seven-year tenure.
