South Africa 2024: What to add to your calendar

Various events have been lined up for the coming year – from the elections to cultural events.

A loadshedding expo is planned to take place in Cape Town in February. Below are 2024 events you may want to make a note of.

GENERAL INTEREST

The Change Africa Conference (April) in Gqeberha will aim to bring together young Africans to review policies and brainstorm solutions for Africa’s socio-economic growth.

Cape Town’s National Loadshedding Expo in February aims to address the ongoing energy challenges with practical solutions and technologies.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) will open 22 300 stations countrywide for registrations for the 2024 elections on the 3rd and 4th of February. The date of the elections has not yet been announced.

ARTS AND CULTURE

The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown will take place from 20 June to 30 June 2024.

The Cape Town Funny Festival (10 June to 7 July) will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024. Local and international comedians will be taking the stage.

Durban’s International Film Festival in July will include global and African film screenings and outreach activities. Founded in 1979, it is the oldest and largest film festival in Southern Africa.

SPORTS

Two of the Springboks’ rivals – New Zealand and Ireland – will be heading to South Africa in 2024 for two test series. The Springboks will play against Ireland in July in Pretoria and Durban. In August, they will face the All Blacks in Johannesburg and in September in Cape Town.

The 97th Comrades Marathon will be run on 9 June 2024, starting in Durban and ending in Pietermaritzburg.

The Western Cape’s Two Oceans Ultra Marathon will be held on 13 April 2024. In 2023, just under 11 000 runners entered to compete in this 56km marathon. In 2024, 14 000 runners are expected.

  • Monday, 1 April: Family Day
  • Saturday, 27 April: Freedom Day
  • Wednesday, 1 May: Workers’ Day
  • Sunday, 16 June: Youth Day
  • Friday, 9 August: National Women’s Day
  • Tuesday, 24 September: Heritage Day
  • Monday, 16 December: Day of Reconciliation
  • Wednesday, 25 December: Christmas Day
  • Thursday, 26 December: Day of Goodwill

The Public Holidays Act states whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following on it shall be a public holiday.
