Old Mutual faces reputational crisis amid policy switch demands

Old Mutual has been facing a public relations nightmare after a user’s post on social media sparked outrage.

Old Mutual is facing a social media uproar, with users urging consumers to switch their policies to other providers. This comes after Old Mutual refused to pay out a pension policy.

An X user named Sebabatso Molefi posted that a court had ordered Old Mutual to pay her mother’s pension, but the firm had not followed through.

Disgruntled social media user exposes Old Mutual

Upset social media user Sebabatso Molefi gained attention on 5 March with a post on X.

“Dear @OldMutualSA please advise why you are refusing to release my mother’s money even though a court order has been provided. You are in contempt of court and I am about to lose my cool right now.”

Molefe claims that financial institution is giving her run-around over her invested pension money pay out.

The post was viewed by over 1.4 million viewers and reshared by over 2800 times.

The post sparked a social media uproar, prompting many users to come forward and complain about Old Mutual, alleging their claims were denied for trivial reasons.

It gave many of Old Mutual clients a platform to vent on how they have been given run-around.

“My mom passed in April last year 2023 @OldMutualSA hasn’t paid the claim,yho girl the stories I am getting from them nhe,” wrote @BaloyiRia

“They kept my education savings lol 3 years of savings,when I couldn’t pay them anymore (stopped working for a while) sanlum is expensive but the best,” wrote @thedontii

Old Mutual replies to Molefe

Old Mutual responded to Molefe’s tweet.” Hi, your comment is worrying to read! We would like to understand what transpired. Please DM us the policyholder’s ID number, policy number, reference number if any, contact number, and email address.” wrote @OldMutualSA

According to a report of the Daily Voice, Old Mutual replied to Molefe that they are investigating the issue and would give feedback in three business day.

Molefi posted on X that a meeting would take place with a number of Old Mutual heavyweights.

She wrote on X, “below from Old Mutual. Stakeholders will also be attending the meeting”.
