In Inanda, the South African Police Service (SAPS) initiated four attempted murder charges against police officers due to a shootout.

SAPS launched inquest investigations following a Monday evening incident on August 7, 2023, where two suspects were fatally wounded during an exchange of gunfire with officers in the Amatikwe area.

SHOOTOUT OCCURS DURING ROUTINE PATROLS

While conducting routine patrols on Mafukuzela Highway, on-duty police officers noticed a vehicle lacking a rear registration plate.

The officers signaled the vehicle to stop, but the driver disregarded their instructions and fled.

Police pursued the vehicle, and unexpectedly, law enforcement officers were targeted with gunfire from its occupants.

Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated, “Police officers, well-prepared tactically, retaliated with gunfire, which caused the driver to lose control, leading to a crash.”

TWO CERTIFIED DEAD ON THE SCENE

The driver and a passenger exited the vehicle and escaped on foot.

After examining the vehicle, three men inside were discovered with gunshot injuries, two of them were pronounced dead on-site.

The third was transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

POLICE SEARCHING FOR THE SUSPECTS

The suspects had a double barrel shotgun and two pistols.

The police are currently searching for the two men who escaped arrest and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and other involved parties were called to the scene to conduct additional inquiries.

SAPS CALL FOR AN END OF SENSELESS KILLINGS OF OFFICERS

SAPS will give a final salute to those who died in the line of duty, and call for the ending of police murders that have been rising in numbers.
